What Is Myrrh Essential Oil?

Myrrh is a reddish-brown dried sap from a thorny tree called Commiphora myrrha. It is native to northeastern Africa and southwest Asia. A steam distillation process is used to extract myrrh essential oil from the resin, which is amber to brown in color and has an earthy scent.

History

Many are familiar that in Biblical times, frankincense and myrrh incense were commonly burned in places of worship. The interesting part is that this was done to help purify the air and prevent the spread of contagious diseases, including those caused by bacteria. Of course the combination of frankincense and myrrh smells fantastic as well.

Myrrh can benefit your skin in many incredible ways. For centuries, it’s been used in traditional Chinese medicine because of its healing properties. It has natural anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties that the Chinese used for eczema, athlete’s foot and minor skin irritation.
